After two weekend camping trips and several months of local hikes and neighborhood walks, we’ve found that the best outdoor backpacks for kids are the REI Tarn 12 for younger kids (up to about age 8, depending on how big they are) and the REI Tarn 18 for older ones. The REI packs are durable, comfortable, and functional, with the right pockets to carry just about anything a kid would want to bring along.
