If foam mattresses leave you feeling hot and bothered or simply stuck, a traditional innerspring mattress—inherently more breathable and resilient—may be your dream bed. Today’s innerspring options are worlds beyond the austere, creaky, or overly springy kind you likely slept on growing up. And nowadays you can order one online, often at a price similar to that of a foam mattress. The key is to know what you’re getting. That’s why, over the past two years, we’ve visited more than a dozen mattress showrooms and stores, interviewed experts, and pored over spec sheets to zero in on 20 contenders. We then evaluated those mattresses in our office with testers of different shapes, sizes, and sleep preferences. We’ve also slept on each of the finalists at home. Here’s what we recommend.

WinkBed, good cushion atop an abundance of coils

WinkBed

Good cushion atop an abundance of coils
A quilted cover, pocketed coils, and foamy top give this bed a pleasingly hefty hybrid feel. But there are no handles, so you’ll need help moving it up any stairs.
We recommend
Saatva Classic, plush, with bounce

Saatva Classic

Plush, with bounce
Offering a classic innerspring bounce paired with a cushy but understated Euro top, the Saatva appeals to those who want to nestle in, as opposed to feel engulfed. But it doesn’t have the best motion isolation.
We recommend
Charles P. Rogers Estate SE, super durability in a box

Charles P. Rogers Estate SE

Super durability in a box
This flippable two-piece mattress is made with high-quality, durable materials—such as latex and extra-sturdy coils—that are rare even in more expensive mattresses. But it’s heavy, and if you want help setting it up you’ll likely have to pay extra.
We recommend
IKEA Hesstun (Medium Firm), a medium-firm bed with a fluffy top

IKEA Hesstun (Medium Firm)

A medium-firm bed with a fluffy top
Far from flimsy, this inexpensive mattress has features—such as curve-conforming microcoils and a plush Euro top—that are normally found in more expensive mattresses. But if you don’t like it, you have to drive it back to IKEA for an exchange.
Budget friendly
Stearns & Foster Estate Rockwell, extra support with pressure relief

Stearns & Foster Estate Rockwell

Extra support with pressure relief
This lofty, upscale-looking bed updates the strong support you might expect from a classic innerspring with a memory-foam cushioning. Its prominent quilting style isn’t for everyone, though.
A better upgrade
